She was six years older than her younger sister, and was close to her. The sisters spent summer vacations together on the Jersey Shore and Long Island. Helen completed three years of high school in New York. She grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Helen met her first husband, baking company scion George Frederick Droste, Jr., at a summer resort. They were married on June 7, 1907 in Manhattan. The couple had two children, George H. Droste and Helen M. Droste.

In 1912 her uncle, Martin Rothschild, drowned on the RMS Titanic. In 1913 Helen's father died. She looked after her younger sister, Dorothy, who was 20 at the time.

George was shown to be a manager at Shults Bread Company, later the Continental Baking Company. The family was prosperous as it baked Wonder Bread.

She and her husband divorced around 1930. Helen lived in Brooklyn Heights with her son and daughter in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

On 30 March 1933 Helen remarried to Victor Grimwood, a divorced Long Island horse breeder, in Maryland, Otsego County, New York. They resided in Garden City, Long Island. The relationship ended and he moved to Connecticut.
