Lorraine Wright Alfaro fell asleep and awoke in the arms of Jesus at 7:27pm on August 5, 2009. Devoted and loving wife of the late Charles R. Alfaro, mother of two children. Daughter of the late Edmund H. Wright, Jr. and Dora Yarbrough Wright and sister of Barbara Ann Morris Wright of Memphis, Tennessee. Lorraine was 84 years young and a native of Memphis, Tennessee. Preeminent musician and teacher now singing praises to the Creator of the Universe. She received her music degree and Master of Music from LSU where she studied with the late Loren Davidson. A member and officer of many professional organizations including Sigma Alpha Iota, American Guild of Organists, NORTA and NATS and of civic orgnaizations including Friends of NOCCA, AMICI, Overture to the Cultural Season and the Opera Guild. She received a plethora of awards including the Mayor's Arts Award, Distinguished Mentor from NOCCA, Who's Who Among America's College Students, Who's Tho Among America's Teachers and the LSU School of Medicine's Strength in Age Artistic Achievement Award. She was the contralto and mezzo-soprano soloist at churches and synagogues throughout the New Orleans area including Touro Synagogue, Trinity Episcopal and St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian. She was the Organist and Choir Director at many churches including St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian, St. Geroge's, St. Andrew's St. Martin's and All Saints Episcopal. She ended her earthy music career as the interim organist at Christ Church, Covington at the age of 84. She sang major roles with the New Orleans Opera including Martha in Faust, Emilia in Othello, Priestess in Aida and Shepherd in Tosca. She enjoyed an illustrious teaching career including positions at Xavier University, Riverdale and Benjamin Franklin. For 22 years she served at the head of vocal music at NOCCA. Most important of all, she has always loved the Lord. A memorial service will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 100 Rex Drive, River Ridge, LA on Friday, August 14, 2009 at 2:00pm. Visitation will be at 1:00pm. A celebration of her life will follow in Morris Hall at All Saints' Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints' Episcopal Church, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, New Orleans Opera Association or AMICI.
