Wilkie Carlos Burt, also known as Skinny, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. Born in Nash County, NC on November 3, 1937, he was the son of the late Johnnie Joseph Burt, Sr. and Pearl Neville Burt. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Joe Howard Burt; and his sisters-in-law, Miriam Joyner Burt and Emelia Anna Gillett Burt.
Carlos was a graduate of Enfield High School. After attending Campbell University for two years, Carlos then went on to East Carolina University where he received his batchelor's degree and then his master's degree. Carlos was married in 1960 to the love of his life, Jane Perkins Burt. He returned to Enfield, NC where he became a farmer. After farming Carlos ran a hardware store for many years. He received a job at Halifax Community College where he worked until his retirement in 2003. Carlos enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting. He loved spending time at the beach. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him, but his loving spirit will never be forgotten as he was everything to his family.
Carlos is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Perkins Burt; his daughter, Janelle Burt Spence, of Enfield; his sons, John Marshall Burt and wife, Barbara, of New Bern, and Jeffrey Davis Burt, of Enfield; his grandchildren, Ashley Spence and Jackson Spence; his brother, Dr. John Joseph Burt, Jr., of Wintergreen, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC with Rev. Steve Bradley officiating. A visitation with the family will follow the service at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Carlos's memory to Enfield United Methodist Church; 209 Whitfield Street Enfield, NC 27823.
