Cois E. Woodard of Eva passed away in Nashville, Tenn., at the age of 83, a distinguished veteran of World War II.
The Celebration of Life and music, with military honors, will be Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Hartselle. The minister John David Crowe is officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. The family will receive friends at Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home this evening from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Key Cemetery in Gandy's Cove with full Honor Guard.
Born into a musical family, Mr. Woodard was a graduate of Eva High School, where he was a star basketball player, helping the Eva Eagles win six County Tournaments and continuing to the Alabama State Playoffs.
At age 19, he served in the Infantry and Army Air Force training as a Cannoneer and Browning Automatic Rifleman Specialist. Stationed first in England, he served in the European Theatre in France and Germany and participated in the Ardennes breakthrough campaigns. He had special memories of the Battle of the Bulge, often relating it to his grandchildren. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal in 1945. Returning to Alabama, he attended Saint Bernard College in Cullman and played football and basketball. After managing the family business, "Woodard's" Dry Goods Store on Moulton Street, Decatur, he went to work at Wolverine Tube in February 1949. That August, he married Betty Virginia Morris after telling her, "If I get a raise in salary, we'll get married," later laughing and admitting, "And, by golly, I did get a raise!" He became supervisor of the shipping department and loved his job for 37 years. (February 1949 through March 1986!)
He returned to the family farm in Eva and enjoyed raising Black Angus Cows. He was baptized in 2004 and loved Sacred Harp Singing and attending his grandsons' football games and golf games.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betty Virginia Morris, and only son, Ross Woodard, and parents, Reuben Kolb Woodard and Ferrol Self Woodard.
He is survived by his three daughters, Bonnie Blue McDaniel and her husband, Mike, of Florence, Beth Ann Woodard Sheehan of Decatur and Love Lea Woodard of Nashville, Tenn.;grandsons, Ross Woodard II, Miles Sheehan, Chaillie Carnegie Watkins III and Woodard Firestone Fite Watkins; granddaughters,Kayla McDaniel, India Sheehan and Anna Laura Sheehan; and a sister, ReubenNell Morris.
Pallbearers are Chris Bryant, Scott Woodard, David Woodard, Baxter Bryant, Don Dougherty, J.R. Goad Jr., Bryan Moses and Steve McKee.
Honorary pallbearers are Fred Morgan, Jimmy Adams, Buddy Dunlap, Bill Dukes, Winford Holmes, Vernon Oden, Ronald Johnson, Scott McKelvey, Joe McKelvey and brothers-inlaw.
