Charles William Hungerford received his undergraduate in plant pathology at the Upper Iowa University, then receiving his Ph.D. in Wisconsin. He traveled to Idaho because of the problems Idaho farmers were having in their fields. He organized the plant pathology department at the University of Idaho. He later became a Dean at the University of Idaho.
His plant pet was the iris.
