Marie Elena Hill Wright departed her earthly realm on March 7, 2022. She was born at home in Cross City, Florida, on January 21, 1945, to the late Ralph and Estelle Nettles Hill. She attended schools in Old Town and Perry, Florida, and Savannah and Valdosta, Georgia, before graduating from Dixie County High School in 1965. She attended North Florida Junior College in Madison for one semester. Marie worked for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for about five years in Tallahassee while her husband James worked for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad and attended FSU. She lived in Jacksonville for about 25 years before she and her husband retired and returned to Dixie County in 2000 and have lived at Rocky Creek since. While living in Jacksonville she was a teacher's aide for the Duval County School System in Baldwin and for the Precious Promises Preschool in Mandarin. She was an avid jogger and, after her knees gave way, she walked a couple of miles almost every day. She would frequently encounter people throughout the tri-county area who did not know her but recognized her as the lady who was always pounding pavement on the Road to Nowhere. Marie was a faithful and loving wife and mother. She was known as a wonderful cook and her scallop chowder was craved by all her friends. She enjoyed scalloping in the gulf and making wreaths with scallop shells and driftwood. Marie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Cross City. She was preceded in death by a sister, a brother and one son. She is survived by her husband of 59 years and two sons, three sisters and three brothers.
