Jim was born and grew up in Nevada, Missouri. He joined the Navy after graduation. One weekend while visiting a shipmates family in Cabin Creek W VA he met the love of his life, He and Judy married later that year and moved to Nevada. From there, back to West Virginia and then finally settled in Columbus, Ohio. Jim worked a full time job, lettered race cars and tow trucks on the weekends and went to college at night. He became an aerospace engineer and worked contract all over the US. He loved history and researched his own family back to the early 1600s. He set up a web page to help others with their searches and a page for his Missouri Bushwhackers. He wrote several internet books concerning Mo history and the Bushwhackers. He lost Judy after 54 years of marriage and then spent the last 5 years working on his websites, building special projects and keeping the kids and grandkids amused with his stories.

Preceding him in death are his parents, James Richard Baker, Sr. and Ruby Alene Wardrip Baker, his wife, Judith Baker, a brother, Donald, a son, Jeffrey, a granddaughter, Rhonda Kay, and a grandson, Brandon.

Survivors include 3 daughers, Kathy (Mitch Rife), Vicki (Brian Huber), and Anita, a son, James (Deanna Goldsmith), 8 grandchildren, Jeff (Melissa Bacha), Cassidee (Matt Green), Jamie, Shelby, James, Christina, Samantha (Tommy Toops, and Eric (Jeff Bargo), 8 great grandchildren, Willow, Tabitha, Abigail, Leelynn, Saveah, Frankie Lynn, Jeffrey and Grace, brothers, Terry and Jeff and sisters, Linda Owens and Jamie Dotson.
