Guy Adams, 49, was killed instantly when his light plane crashed at Everett Hathaway's landing strip three miles south of Klickitat Friday evening about 5:20.
Sheriff Ez Kaiser reported that Hathaway and Adams, each flying a plane, were returning from The Dalles. Hathaway, in the lead, had landed his plane. Adams came in behind him and the landing gear of his Aeronca Chief snagged a power line strung across the field at the north end. The plane nose-dived into the rock-strewn field and flopped over on its back completely demolished. The weather was clear at the time, the pilot evidently misjudged his distance in making his approach.
The motor of the plane was pushed back almost in the cockpit, Adams was pinned in, and his body was extricated from the plane with difficulty by the sheriff and others who rushed to the crash scene. The body was taken to Phillips Funeral Home in Goldendale.
The tail assembly of Adams' plane buckled and dangled from the wreckage; the right wing was ruined in the crash.
A crew from the PUD in White Salmon rushed to the scene to cut off power along the Klickitat-Lyle Road until the loose wires could be gathered up. Train service out of Klickitat was held up for a while until the downed wires were cleared from the rail-road track, which runs along the landing field.
Adams was a well-known figure in county aviation circles and made frequent trips around the area in his plane. He often flew to Goldendale on business.
Funeral services were conducted here Tuesday afternoon, with H.H. McCardell in charge. Speakers were Elder Lester Richardson of Klickitat and Elder Mozart Burleos of White Salmon.
Interment followed in Spring Creek Cemetery.
