US Congressman. He attended St. John's College in Annapolis, became the owner and operator of a plantation, and was involved in real estate investment and other ventures. In addition, Weems was a lay leader of Maryland's Episcopal Church and served as Postmaster of the Tracy's Landing post office near his home. In early 1826 he was elected as a Jacksonian to a seat in the US House of Representatives left vacant when Joseph Kent resigned to become Governor. Weems was elected to a full term later that year and served from February 1826 to March, 1829. While in the House he engaged in a well publicized debate on the issue of abolishing slavery in the District of Columbia and advanced for the first time several arguments that were later routinely used by advocates of slavery. He did not run for reelection in 1828 and returned to his plantation and other business interests.
