A civil engineer, he married Marguerite Whiteley in Washington, DC on 9 December 1896. They had three children, two of whom died in infancy.

He served as city surveyor for Baltimore from 1895-1899, and died of malaria at the quarantine station in Santa Marta, Colombia, while on an engineering project. He was survived by his wife, later known by her stage name of Margaret Seddon, and their daughter.
The sister mentioned in the attached newspaper article was Harriett Lott Sloan (1865 - 1951), wife of Russell E. Andreas (it's misspelled in the article).
