Deaths of two in Stafford, W. VA said apparent murder-suicide.

Two people died in stafford Cemetery last night (17 Sept. 1976 newspaper of which I have a copy) in an apparent murder-suicide, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's dept.

The department is pursuing the murder-suicide motive in connection with the deaths of John Wesley MUSSELMAN, 22, and Lilah Mae MULLEN 52, both of Stafford.

MUSSELMAN and Mrs. MULLEN were found by sheriff's deputies in the living room of MUSSELMAN's home on Virginia 628 shortly after 8:30 P.M. yesterday. MUSSELMAN was still alive when the deputies arrived. He was lying on the floor of the living room with a bullet wound in his right temple.

Mrs. MULLEN was in a chair across the room, according to the deputies, and had been shot once in the chest and once in the head with a small caliber weapon. She was pronounced dead on the scene by a medical examiner. Accoring to the sheriff's department, a .22 caliber pistol was recovered from the floor beside MUSSELMAN's body.

MUSSELMAN was taken to Mary Washington Hospital where he died in the emergency room. The sheriff's department reported that a note had been found on MUSSELMAN's body, but it was not immediately clear whether it was a suicide note.

According to the deputy reports there was no one else in the house at the time of the shooting. The call to the sheriff's department apparently came from one of MUSSELMAN's sons who had returned home after the shooting took place.

People who had seen MUSSELMAN and Mrs. MULLEN together earlier in the evening reported that they had seemed in good spirits, a deputy said.

The sheriff's department is continung to investigate the case.

Mrs. MULLEN's body is at ELKINS Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements were incomplete this morning.

A self-employed contract carpenter, MUSSELMAN was a member of Ramoth Baptist Chirch and a former member of the Stafford Rescue Squad.

He is survived by a daughter, Theresa BOUTCHYARD of Stafford; two sons, Wesley MUSSELMAN and Scott MUSSELMAN both of Stafford; his mother, Ruth H. MUSSELMAN, also of Stafford; five sisters, Rachel RODGERS, Beatrice SMITH, Hazel WINE, Shelva YOUNG, and Betty Lou LAFOLLETTE, and one granddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Ramoth Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Joseph F. STOVER will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Upton M. FAIRFAX, Jr., Upton M. FAIRFAX, Sr., Aubrey Lee PAYNE, Claude BYRAM, James H. BOUTCHYARD and David Jerry BOUCHYARD.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at WHEELER & THOMPSON Funeral Home.

This was my father's sister and my aunt. She was a lovely lady who is very much missed.
