Nancy and her younger brother Harold Jackson Jr "Tom" grew up in Longwood during the midst of the Great Depression and during the World War II years when folks knew one another, self-reliance was a virtue, people were poor but didn't know it, and having shoes meant "your daddy had money!" Her childhood was pretty much idyllic and was spent playing in the groves, climbing trees, hunting and fishing, shooting marbles, swimming at Sanlando Springs, fried Mullet on Fridays, Saturday shopping and movies on Orange Avenue in Orlando, summers at Daytona Beach, and an occasional dance at the Longwood and Altamonte Hotels. She attended the Lyman school for all 12 grades and pretty much started her education with the same twelve "Greyhound" classmates that she graduated with in 1950.
In the early 1950s Nancy met Henry Baker "Bud" Freeman of Lake Mary, FL and they were married at home October 8th, 1952. When asked in later years "when did you first notice Bud?" and she responded, "when he bought his yellow Mercury Monterey convertible!" During the 1950s, Nancy helped run the family citrus grove business in Longwood and worked in Orlando for McKesson and Robbins pharmaceuticals. With the birth of her first son Harold Baker "Hal" Freeman on May 13th, 1959 she opted out of office work and decided to at stay home to become a fulltime mother and housewife. Her second son Bradley Drew "Brad" Freeman was born February 14th, 1961. After her "boys" started school at Longwood Elementary school, Nancy decided to finish her education and attended Seminole Junior College (now SCC) and Florida Technological University (now UCF) where she graduated with a degree in Education in 1970. During the next three decades, Nancy made a difference and taught hundreds of 5th graders in Sanford, Florida at the historic Sanford Grammar and Hamilton Elementary schools; she retired from the profession in 1996.
Shortly before retirement and after devastating freezes in the 1980s, Nancy and her brother Tom decided it was time to "sell the groves" around Longwood to developers and ultimately the family home. It was a bittersweet decision since some of the old "seedling" rootstock was planted by Longwood founder Edward Henck in 1875 and was one of the oldest continuous producing groves in Seminole county; the farmhouse itself was the container for nearly all of Nancy's memories and the only home she had ever known. The break was finally made in 1996, when "Nan" and "Bud" fulfilled a lifelong dream of having "a place on the ocean" and transitioned to living full time in New Smyrna Beach. The next few years were spent having cocktails on the balcony, having meals with friends and family at the New Smyrna Beach Yacht Club, traveling the world, shopping and dining at all the best places, and enjoying the fruits of successful hard work and thrift! These were truly the "Golden Years" and the culmination of a lifetime of love for one another, devotion, and eternal friendship.
She is survived by her son, Harold "Hal" Freeman and wife Jennie, Mt Plymouth, FL. Son Bradley "Brad" Freeman and wife Hannah, St Louis, MO. Granddaughter Jessica Freeman Jensen and husband William, Sanford, FL; Grandson Ryan Freeman and wife Catalina, Dallas TX; Grandsons Cameron and Jackson Freeman, St Louis, MO; Great Grandchildren, Charlotte and Georgia Freeman, Dallas, TX; Camden and Jackson Jensen, Sanford, FL.
Nancy Freeman will be laid to rest at the Evergreen Cemetery in Sanford, FL with her parents, brother, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
