Sylvia Marie Oswald, 82, of Wheeling, WV, passed away at home on Monday, January 24, 2022 after declining health over the last several months. A private service for immediate family will be held Monday, January 31, 2022 in Wheeling with funeral mass presided over by Rev. Msgr. Paul Hudock of St Vincent De Paul parish and burial at Mt Calvary Cemetery.

Sylvia was born on January 28, 1939, in Allegheny Township, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Teresa and Stephen of Hyde Park. She graduated from Leechburg Area High School in 1957 and went on to attend the Robert Morris Business School. Sylvia then worked as a secretary until she married Richard Oswald on September 5, 1959, after which she waitressed at Eat 'N Park while starting a family, including three sons – Vincent, Timothy, and Stephen – and a daughter, Laura. In 1970, the family moved to Wheeling, WV. Not long after relocating, Sylvia began working as a waitress for Ernie's Esquire Supper Club, where she honed her passion for serving. In 1980, daughter Valerie would complete the family. Sylvia remained working for the Esquire until its closing, after which she worked part-time for Zien's until retirement in the early 2000s.

She enjoyed gardening with quite a green thumb and looked forward to planting a garden each year. Additionally, she took great joy in planting a variety of annual blooms each spring while also tending many perennials, including hostas, daylilies, irises, hydrangeas, and azaleas. In addition to flourishing outdoor flora, Sylvia had a knack for keeping indoor plants thriving, and it was not uncommon for folks to pass her along a plant that was on its last leaf and she'd restore it to full health.

When she wasn't tinkering around her yard, Sylvia often spent time in the kitchen, having a love of cooking and baking, and was known for making many recipes from scratch. Often the first thing visitors would be asked is if they were hungry, and even if they weren't, Sylvia would offer to feed someone. It's just who she was with her care for others. Many co-workers, family members and neighbors often received gifts of baked goods throughout the years as well. Christmases were filled with overflowing cookie trays, but she was most especially known for her nut roll recipe, which has been passed down to her daughters who share her love of baking.

One thing Sylvia was well known for among her family was not only her enjoyment of the game Scrabble, but also her keen ability to win. Games were often high-scoring and Sylvia relished her abilities to complete numerous 7-letter word scores, often pairing with triple word scores, during a game. She played regularly during family visits up until the last few years of her life.

Sylvia had a fondness for dogs, but especially dachshunds and her miniature dachshund London – a gift from her daughter Valerie – was the light of her life for six years from 2004 until his tragic death in 2010. London was otherwise affectionately known as "Bun," because Sylvia thought he hopped around like a bunny rabbit. After his death, Sylvia was too distraught to get another dog and instead took up loving her daughter Valerie's pack of canines, including several dachshunds, instead of having one of her own again. As it was Sylvia's wish, London's ashes will be buried with her and they will be together once more in loving companionship.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Stephen and Leonard Huska, her sister Julia Dosch, grandson Eric Oswald, and her beloved dachshund London.

In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to Dachshund Rescue of North America www.drna.org or Dollar for Doxies www.dollarfordoxies.com/donate in memory of Sylvia's great love for a breed that brought great joy to her life, or to Meals on Wheels www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org as they provided local services for Sylvia during her final months.
