James Porter "Porter" Redick was born November 21, 1876, in Denison, Grayson County, Texas to parents, John Harris Redick and Mary Mason Vestal.

Porter's siblings are: ; Lucy Prudence Redick Ford; Cleon Redick, who died in 1891; James Madison "Matt" Redick; Jonas Rude Redick, who died in 1938; Millard Fillmore Redick; and Nellora Grace Redick Glover.

James Porter Redick is the grandson of Cleon Redick (Reddick) and Lucy Harris and James Madison Vestal and Martha Jane English, all of Texas.

Porter's father first rented, then purchased the land that encompasses from Texoma Parkway and Highway 82, in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas, to Texoma Parkway/Armstrong Avenue and Iron Ore Creek in Denison. The family grew fruits, vegetables, and cotton and cultivated orchards. The Redick family were productive and successful farmers.

Porter's father, John Harris Redick, passed away in 1893. Porter's father is buried at Shannon Cemetery, Dripping Springs Road, in Sherman. Porter's father is buried beside Porter's brother, Cleon; Porter's Redick grandparents; and Porter's uncle, Jonas Rude Redick, who is his father's brother and who passed away in 1873.

James Porter married Estelle M. Ross November 25, 1900, in Denison. Their daughters are: Clara Robenia Redick; Burniece Lucile Redick McClunin; Jewel May Redick Stitt; Mildred Redick; Colleen Redick; Pauline Willie Redick; and Norma Jean Redick. Their sons are: John Ross Redick; James Porter Redick; Hugh Darrell Redick; and Robert Ross Redick.
