He was the second son of King Maximilian I of Bavaria and his first wife Princess Augusta Wilhelmine of Hesse-Darmstadt.
Married morganatically Marie Petin, for whom he had this mausoleum built. He was a Bavarian Military Field Marshall, but lost his rights to the throne because of his love for Marie. They had three daughters, who he created countesses in 1841.
He had no children with his second wife, the widow Henriette Schรถller, a former actress.
He died in a riding accident.
