Hugh Milton Stackhouse served three years in the Confederate Army, during the Civil War. He was First Sergeant Co. F, 4th South Carolina Cavalry. He served as State Senator from 1896 to 1900 and was in the State Legislature in 1892. He was Trustee of Clemson College from 1892 to 1901 and actively connected with that College from 1901 to 1927. Upon retiring, he was named Professor Emeritus of Clemson College.
