Eloise Dowell, 91, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, died at 6:30 PM, Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, in IU Arnett Hospital, surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren. Born June 19, 1930, she was the only child of Ethridge C. "Eff" and Mildred Louise (Larson) French. A lifelong Lafayette resident, she was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson High School, where the highlight of her senior year was the boys' basketball team winning the 1948 IHSAA State Championship. She married William Dale "Bill" Dowell on May 27, 1950, and he died Aug. 19, 1982.

Eloise worked at the General Telephone office for a couple of years prior to her marriage. In 1969, she re-entered the work force with the Credit Bureau in downtown Lafayette. Her duties there required daily trips to the Tippecanoe County Courthouse where she collected info on mortgages and deeds. This led Tippecanoe County Recorder Leona Brier recruiting her to be her First Deputy, a post she served from March 1976 to January 1983. She remained in the Recorder's office under subsequent Tippecanoe County Recorders Dottie High and Ruth Shedd.

After retirement in 1992, she became a volunteer for St. Elizabeth Hospital where she delivered flowers to patients and made telephone calls to shut-ins. She was a fan of the Purdue University Women's Basketball team and a long-standing member of the Boilermaker Network for which she helped compile the monthly newsletter. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church where she occasionally acted as a greeter and in years past volunteered with the Christmas for Everyone program.

Our Mom loved shopping, especially for shoes. As a young girl, her life-long love for red shoes was inspired by Dorothy's ruby slippers in "The Wizard of Oz". She loved to travel, enjoying bus trips with her daughter Vonda, creating lots of fun memories! She loved watching TV, in recent years watching re-runs of old TV westerns. She loved to sew, making dresses for her girls as we grew up. More recently she enjoyed making clothes for her cement goose that sits on the front porch! Within the family and close friends, she was known for her meatloaf. Many people might wrinkle their noses at the idea of meatloaf, but hers was the best ever!

Surviving are three daughters, Vonda J. Dowell, Karen S. Eastridge and Mary L. Corbin (husband Mike), all of Lafayette; seven grandchildren, David W. Eastridge (Christie Raney) of Anderson, AL, Daniel J. Eastridge (Vivian Scott), Brian W. Minniear, Lindsay R. Minniear, Kelsey L. Brown (husband Zach), Courtney McGurr (husband Jeremy), and Katey M. Corbin (Steffan Eller), all of Lafayette; and eleven great-grandchildren, Shawn, Michael, Finn, Daniel, Jordyn, Ella, William, Morgyn, Karter, Kamryn, and Ayres. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; daughter, Beverly Minniear (in 2018); and grandson, William M. Corbin (in 2007).

Visitation will be held from Noon-2 PM Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at Hippensteel Funeral Home; 822 N 9th St, Lafayette. Funeral service will follow starting at 2 PM; Rev. Bruce Mowery officiating. Internment following at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mental Health America or the American Heart Association.
