John was the son of John James Yingling Sr. & Hannah Shaffer. He married Frances Armelda Jane Johnson on December 9, 1866 in Mercer County, Missouri. To this union, 6 children were born. John was a Private in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted on March 23, 1862 in Co. H, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry and this unit became Co. L, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He was mustered out on April 4, 1865.
