On April 18, 1871, the Charlotte Southern Home reported the death of William W. Elms:
"In this city, on the 16th last, Mr. W.W. Elms, an old citizen, and one who has done much towards building up this city. His age was 61 years."

W. W. became a prominent merchant in Charlotte in the 1830's. J. B. Alexander wrote about him and his nephew, Charles Elms Spratt, in History of Mecklenburg County (1902).

On 28 Jan 1851, as part of the Western Plank Road, Corp : "Rozzell Ferry toll bridge authorized with William W. Elms, Dr. S. X. Johnston, Richard Rozelle, John W. Caldwell, and Robert H. Brevard as incorporators." (Private Laws 1851, p. 681) , page 148 The Annals of Lincoln County, NC by William L. Sherrill, originally published in Charlotte in 1937 by Frank H. Crowell.

B. F. Davidson was the bondsman for the marriage. The newspaper announcement of their marriage stated that they were married at the home of Wm Davidson, Esq. in Mecklenburg, by Rev. A. J. Leavenworth. Issue of 11 Nov 1836, Charlotte Journal.

The March 2003 edition of the "York County Genealogical Quarterly" had the following from William Boyce's Diary: On Dec. 14, 1855, "Wm. Elms failed and broke several men --$180,000."

On April 30, 1851, W. W. Elms was named guardian of his child, Rebekah Jane Elms. W. G. Phillips and Alexander Graham were also guardians.

W. W. was elected County Commissioner of Charlotte in 1840.
