He was principal conductor of several international orchestras. His career lasted 65 years, beginning at age 27, when he conducted Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He became chief conductor there for 28 years, before moving to London. In London he was principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1979, Royal Opera from 1987 to 2000, Covent Garden, and the Glyndebourne Festival in Britain from 1977 to 1988. He also conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Dresden Staatskapelle. The last concert he conducted of Beethoven and Bruckner was with the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra in Lucerne, Switzerland when he was 90 years old.
