Nurse, Wife, Mother, Grandmother
Mary Lillig was born in the Anthracite Coal region of Pennsylvania on Christmas Day. Her father, Jacob Lillig, was of German decent and he served as an assistant foreman in a local coal mine. Her mother, Anna McCormick, was Irish. As a child, Mary demonstrated a tremendous artistic talent through her oil paintings. She left her humble roots for Philadelphia, where she studied and completed nursing school and served as a nurse. In 1942, she married John A Fraser and they produced one son, John, in 1945. The family resided in the Delaware County suburb of Drexel Hill at 709 Windermere Ave. Mary enjoyed working her flower garden alongside her house. She was also known for baking up a mean batch of mincemeat tarts. She was a stalwart, but responsible, drinker of Bavarian beer. When that brewery was closed, she switched to Rolling Rock beer. A dedicated mother and housewife, Mary also enjoyed spending time with her neighbors: The Saunders (who are buried next to her), The McGarrigle sisters, The Armstrongs, and the Mullens. She was also close to her aunt, Theresa, and her family. In 1974, Mary retired, and her husband died in 1977. She greatly enjoyed the visits of her son and his family. Without fail, her 4 grandsons were greeted with a fresh cache of matchbox cars upon their arrival. After her health declined due to the effects of emphysema, she left Drexel Hill in 1992 and moved to Doylestown, PA to be closer to her son. She later moved into an assisted living facility. Death came on Winter's last day, 1997. She was 84.
