John graduated from Kingston High School, Class of 1967. He enlisted in the US Navy in March of 1969 and served until March of 1975. His service career included two tours in Vietnam. Upon his return he was employed by Hercules/Ireco and later became the proprietor of JB's Corner Rest in Port Ewen along with his spouse Laura Clerc Barnes. They operated JB's for several years moving it to Greenkill Avenue in Kingston. He then worked for Kingston Kabs until he retired and became a caregiver to his mother. Upon his mother's passing he moved to Port St. Lucie, Florida and resided with his son and daughter in law and their family until his illness.
