Doyle was killed during World War II. Son of Ezra Winfield & Mertie Leo Corley Rutledge. Husband of Mildie Marie Griffith.

He registered for the draft June 30, 1942 and was inducted into the Army May 22, 1944 at Camp Joseph T Robinson in Arkansas. He joined Company E, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division on January 8, 1945 when the Company was in the vicinity of Sainlez, Belgium, serving as a Rifleman, and was promoted to Private First Class February 8, 1945. PFC Doyle L. Rutledge was killed in action by mortar fire while holding a defensive position in a woods about 2 miles west of Gladbeck, Germany. He was originally buried at Netherlands American Military Cemetery in Margraten, Holland
