The enlistment register states he was born in Paris, France, that he was 5' 6-1/2" tall, and had light hair, hazel eyes, and a dark complexion.
Emile became a Soldier in the 4th Artillery, Co. G. He deserted one year later, on 18 February 1865, was apprehended after three weeks of absence, on 11 March 1865, and re-assigned to his unit.
He continued serving in the Union Army through the end of the war and was discharged after 2 years of duty, in February 1866.
