Pauline Agassiz was born in Switzerland but her father moved the family to Cambridge, Massachusetts, when he became a professor at Harvard University. When Pauline was nineteen, she married Quincy Adams Shaw. They were parents to five children. Pauline Agassiz Shaw was able to use her husband’s wealth and status to help Boston’s poor. She co-founded the North Bennet Street Industrial School (North Bennet Street School). Pauline funded fourteen public kindergartens with her friend, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody. She opened daycare centers/day nurseries for working mothers and neighborhood houses. An advocate of women’s rights, Pauline served as president of the Boston Equal Suffrage Association for Good Government. The Woman’s Journal received her support. (bio by md rudder)
