John was a veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps from 1947 to 1950. He attended Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, GA and was a 1953 graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. He was associated with Batson-Cook Construction Company for 40 years and became President of Batson-Cook of Tampa. He had served as President of the Rotary Club of Buckhead in Atlanta and had been involved with the Associated General Contractors in Georgia and in Western Florida and helped found the Golden Hammer Award of Atlanta. He was listed in Marquis Who's Who. He served on the board of directors of the Institute of Continued Learning at Young Harris College and had been a staunch member and chair of the Board of Deacons of the Bethel Baptist Church of Smyrna, GA, among other affiliations.
John liked to travel and especially enjoyed visiting England, Germany, Austria, and the Baltic Sea countries, plus Hawaii and Canada. His hobbies were creating stained glass windows, drawing, whittling, listening to music of the 1940's and studying history both through reading and in classes at ICL of Young Harris College. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, as well as friends and extended family members. His wit, intelligence and dry sense of humor will long be cherished memories among those who knew him.
