Using the grave marker photo posted on the memorial which lists his age at death as 66 years, a calculated birth year would be 1786. He is age 65 in the 1850 Census, which would calculate to 1784 or 1785, so 1786 is certainly possible. Also, according to the 1850 Census, he was born in Pennsylvania.

I also do not have John b. 1782 as his son. Perhaps he was a brother.
The 1850 Census shows his wife as Isabel, age 56, which would have her born 1793-94 in PA.
