Payne, Alvah. Age 23.(his brother)same residence and nativity enlisted Aug. 15, 1862 into same company.Died Aug. 22, 1863, St. Louis, Missouri.
They were the sons of Ira Beebe Payne and Julia Ann Oliver. Ironically, Alvah R. Payne had died the day before, on 22 August 1863 in a hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. The cause of death for both of them was chronic diarrhea. Many of the men who died were interred near this hospital but after 1864 they were re-interred at Chamette National Cemetery. Orrin M. Payne had married Julia J. Hemmings in Prairie du Chien, Crawford County, Wisconsin on 30 December 1861. Julia remarried on 30 March 1865 to John Stewart in Frankville, Winneshiek County, Iowa.
