Thomas Prioleau Whaley was born in Pendleton, S.C., the son of William Baynard Whaley, Jr and Helen Jones Smith, on July 12, 1870. He attended private school in Charleston, then the high school of Charleston, and graduating from the Medical College of the State of South Carolina in 1892. In 1895, her married Henrietta Righton Robertson. They had two children, Elizabeth Robertson Whaley (1897–1990), and Admiral William Baynard Whaley (1899–1987). They resided in Charleston their entire lives.

During his senior year of medical school, he served as substitute intern for the Charleston City Hospital, and after graduation, served a year as intern In St. Francis Xavier Hospital. In 1893 and 1894, he spent time in Vienna and became experienced in surgery, genito-urinary diseases and dermatology. He afterward, spent a few weeks In Paris, before returning to Charleston. He was a frequent visitor at meetings and clinics, and worked with Dr. Edebohls of New York, from whom he learned the technique of decapsulation of the kidneys.

He was president of the South Carolina Medical Association in 1906, and previously had been secretary for ten years. He belonged to many medical organizations. He attended the City Hospital during the summer months, and was a lecturer to the Training School for Nurses of that institution. He also lectured on dermatology at the Medical College (1905-1912), and was professor of genito-urinary surgery in the college for several years. He also worked in the Shirras Dispensary. He was very popular, having many friends and was quite dear to his patients.

He is said to have been one of the first in this area to use spinal anesthesia, one of the first to use the x-ray, the first to decapsulate the kidneys, to recognize beri-beri, and to devote much attention to urology.
He died January 14, 1918.

Obituary:

Funeral Services to be Held This Afternoon

The funeral services of the late Dr T Prioleau Whaley, who died yesterday afternoon at the Baker Sanitorium as the result of burns received at his residence, No 12 Limehouse Street, December 28, when his bathrobe caught afire from an open gas heater, will be held at Grace Episcopal Church this afternoon at 3.30 o'clock. The Rev William Way, rector of Grace Church, will officiate. The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Arrangements have been made by the J M Connelley Company.

Dr Whaley had practiced his profession in Charleston since receiving his degree as a doctor of medicine and was among the best known practitioners in Charleston.

For several days it had been known that Dr Whaley would not recover from the serious burns he received. Owing to his critical condition his brother, Congressman Richard S Whaley, came from Washington several days ago.

Dr Whaley is survived by a widow, who was Miss Henrietta Robertson; a son and a daughter, who is married. He was forty-six years old.

Pallbearers will be Dr J Merceir Green, Dr Joseph Maybank, Dr J L LaRoche, Mr Edward Frost Lowndes, Dr Edward F Parker, Dr Walter Peyre Porcher, Dr Charles P Aimar, Mr Henry P Williams, Dr A Johnston Buist and Dr A E Baker.
