Jan was born in the small village of Tolbert in the Netherlands. After experiencing the calamity of WWII, Jan immigrated to the United States in 1948. He settled in the Los Angeles, Ca. area and worked as a baker. Here he met his wife, Greta, also a native of the Netherlands and they were married in 1957.
During the last 15 years of his career he managed the bakery departments for the Hughes Market chain. After his retirement, Jan and Greta did a lot of traveling and saw many places far and near. They later moved to Jess Ranch in Apple Valley, Ca. Greta passed away in 2004. While living in Jess Ranch, Jan frequently enjoyed riding his bicycle along the many paths nearby and did so until just a week before his death.
Jan is survived by his sons, Cliff and Robert; nephew, Phillip; nieces, Linda and Nancy and four grandchildren.
