He grew up on a small farm near Brookville, OH, west of Dayton and went to the U. of Cincinnati, graduating in Chemical Engineering in 1963. Following his marriage to Patricia Ann Mason in 1960 and the birth of his daughter Pamela in 1961 he decided to get into the field of plastics. He worked for Owens-Illinois in Toledo for 20 years in the field of Plastics Processing R&D. His second daughter Jill was born there as well. Following that, he spent 5 years in a similar capacity at Avery-Dennison in Painesville, OH, and then 15 years at LyondellBasell in Wilmington, DE, as a Tech Service Engineer. Pat and he were volunteers in the Youth for Understanding high school international exchange program for 35 years and hosted 23 great kids. He moved back to the Cleveland area in 2003 and suffered the grief of his wife's death in 2011, after 51 years of marriage. Later he re-married to Patricia Marie Kulcsar, who survives him. He had two major hobbies, one being stamp collecting, and won major national awards for his exhibits. He was the Secretary-Treasurer of the national US Cancellation Club (USCC) for 15 years and Co-Chairman for 12 years of the Garfield-Perry Stamp Club Annual March Party Stamp Show, the largest in Ohio. He also was an avid compiler of his families' genealogies, having traced both parents' heritage back 400 years to small towns in Germany, visited those places and published books for the families. In addition to his parents and first wife being deceased so are his daughter Pamela Sears and sister Janet Rhoads. Surviving are his wife Patricia M., daughter Jill (Bjorn) Rhoads of Stockholm, Sweden; brother Jerry (Marilyn) Rhoads, son-in-law Jeffrey Sears, grandsons Mitchell (Kelly) Sears, great-grandson Harrison; and Bryan Sears. He also dearly loved his stepchildren and their families: Julie (Jeremy) Moen, Alexandra, Adam and Aaron; Alice (Alex) Penner, Henry, Sofia and Noah of Duelmen, Germany; and Joseph (Rheanon) Kulcsar, Joseph and Jacob. A memorial service will be held from 10– 1 on Saturday, May 1, 2021 by Pastor Ken Sowers at Prince of Peace Church, 7193 Reynolds Road, Mentor, OH.
