Virginia Hope (Straus) Thorkelson, 82, of Mansfield, wife of H. John Thorkelson, died Thursday, (April 25, 2002) at Hartford Hospital, four weeks after suffering a stroke. She was born January 9, 1920 in New York City, NY, only child of the late Catherine (McGuire) Straus and Albert J. Straus. She attended public schools in New York and entered the University of Wisconsin in 1937. She married in 1940 and lived briefly in Washington, DC, Detroit, MI, and Berlin, Germany. She returned to Wisconsin in 1948, completed her undergraduate work with honors; and moved to Mansfield in 1950, where she earned an M.A. in English from the University of Connecticut. She remained there most of the rest of her life. Besides her husband, she leaves four children, Peter Tork, of Los Angeles, CA, Nicholas of Somerville, MA, Christopher of Mansfield, and Annie of San Francisco, CA; seven grandchildren, Hallie, Ivan, Eli, Molly, Catherine, Ruby and Erica; and many much-loved friends. Contributions may be made in her name to the St. Paul's Covenant Soup Kitchen of Willimantic; the Mansfield Public Library book fund; or to the donor's choice of an organization furthering the cause of social justice.
