TRIBUTE FROM NEWSLETTER OF FORT SMITH TROLLEY MUSEUM - Spring 2021
Joseph St.Cloud "Joe" Irwin passed away on February 11th, 13 days before his 91st birthday. Joe was an excellent trolley motorman. Joe began his motorman career with the Trolley Museum in May of 2004 and operated for 16 years. He was an entertaining story teller and museum visitors always enjoyed his stories.
Joe's interest in trolleys and railroads had an interesting history. HIs paternal grandfather, J.C. Irwin, moved to Fort Smith in 1900 and worked for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. His maternal grandfather, Angus McLeod, a native of Scotland, obtained a US citizenship in Fort Smith in 1904 and owned the Fort Smith Contracting Company that supplied railroad ties to the railroads.
Joe was a faithful volunteer and any Wednesday you could find him at the controller of the Fort Smith Light and Traction 224 regaling the museums visitors with tales of Fort Smith history. He will be greatly missed by many.
