Cordie Mae Bowen was born in Jonesborough, Coryell County, Texas November 13, 1899, to James Edward Bowen and Mary Caroline Sellers, who also had a son, Joel Thomas Bowen, born in November 1895. Cordie's father was born in Mississippi and her mother in Louisiana. Apparently her parents remained in Coryell County and died there, but Cordie moved to McLennan County.

Cordie married Floyd Estle Brown, son of James Monroe Brown and Cloah Ellen Partlow Brown on 10 June 1917 in McLennan County. They had four children -- Margaret Ruth, born 1918 in Waco, James Edward, born 1920 in Desdemona, Billy Joe, born 1924 in Waco, and Donald Ray, born 1928 in Waco. The couple lived their entire married life in Waco, Texas with the exception of a couple of years around 1920 when they joined the throngs in the oil boom town of Desdemona to take advantage of good jobs available; Floyd was in the construction business there. The couple divorced in September 1933 after 16 years of marriage, and the three children remained with their mother.

Cordie reared her children well with solid basic values, impeccable manners, and good grooming. They were also very gifted musically, and Cordie saw to it that they had music training to develop their gifts. James Edward became an actor quite by accident and also recorded single 45 rpm records; he was best known as Lt. Rip Masters in the old television series, "Rin Tin Tin". Billy Joe graduated from Baylor with both a bachelor's and master's degree, the latter in music. He led bands and orchestras but later entered the insurance business with his wife in California. Ruth was a tall, graceful and elegant woman always impeccably dressed and coiffed. The youngest boy, Donald Ray, was injured playing with his brothers when he was only 8 years old; he was taken to the hospital where he died from a heart condition. The family lived at 406 Tennessee Street, Waco, Texas, when Donald Ray died.

Cordie was a beautiful, vivacious, energetic and very likeable woman who loved life and tried to make the most of it. She had a warm relationship with her in-laws. Cordie became a beautifican and even got her sister-in-law into the beauty business in Waco.

Cordie died of a heart attack and is buried in Waco at Oakwood Cemetery next to her ex-husband, Floyd, and their young son, Donald Ray. At the time of her death, Cordie lived at 2411 Colonial Avenue, Waco, Texas.
