14th President of Bolivia. He served as president from As 4 May 1861 to 28 December 1864. Prior to becoming president he joined the Bolivian army rising to the rank of general. He took part in the battles and campaigns of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation. Within the army he held various positions of importance until assuming the Ministry of Defense during the Linares government. He then conspired to overthrow the incumbent President Linares in 1861. He organized a a coup and presided over a constituent assembly which promulgated a new Constitution and elected him interim president. He was then elected to the presidency in 1862 by the National Congress. He is best remembered for his presidency being the most violent in the history of the Bolivian nation. He did little for the country and was overthrown by General Mariano Melgarejo. He was exiled for a while then returned to Bolivia and died.
