Mr. Logan C. B. Hampton, Sr., was born February 28, 1937 in Lake City, AR, the fifth child to Ora Lee Clay Hampton Davis and Richard Hampton Sr. Affectionately known as L. C. by family and friends, he joined Lake Grove Baptist Church in Bay, Arkansas at an early age.

Logan graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Jonesboro, AR. He attended Arkansas AM&N (now University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) on a football scholarship and graduated in 1962 with a degree in education and a minor in reading.

In 1962, he married Lena Mae Josephine Drayer of Princeton Pike near Pine Bluff, AR. Later that year, the family moved to Parkin, AR where he landed his first professional job as an assistant principal and reading teacher. After a few years, he left the schoolhouse to begin work for the federal government landing his first assignment with the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), an agency that administered the War on Poverty program of the administration of President Lyndon Johnson. This move led him to a new management opportunity with the Social Security Administration (SSA). As a new SSA manager, he opened and managed the SSA branch office in DeRidder, LA, a pivotal career move that served to be a delightful stop for him and his family. There, they learned South Louisiana culture and most especially enjoyed the cuisine. His performance in DeRidder opened the door for a promotion and return to Arkansas as assistant district manager in the Pine Bluff SSA district office where he worked until he retired in 2009.

An avid reader, self-proclaimed photographer, stylish dresser, and servant leader, he leaves a library of books, neckties sufficient for a clothier’s closet, and a living testament that “everybody can be great...because anybody can serve”. In retirement, he actively served the church and community. A member of New Hope CME Church in Pine Bluff, he served as Sunday School Superintendent, member of the Steward Board, Lay Leader, and delegate to District, Annual, and General Conferences of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a member and leader in Bible Study Fellowship in Pine Bluff. In the community, he served as chairman for many years and a board member of the Pine Bluff Housing Authority Board of Commissioners until his death, even having a street named in his honor. He was also a member of the Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Hampton Sr., mother, Ora Lee Clay Hampton Davis, sisters, Sadie Hampton Fulmore, Anna Mae Hampton Clay Riggins, Patricia Hampton Ross, brothers, Johnny Hampton, Herman Hampton, Clarence Hampton, Jim Bo Hampton.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lena Mae Josephine Hampton (Pine Bluff, AR); daughter and her husband, Jacqueline and Eric Epperson (Arlington, TX); son and his wife, Logan and Susan Hampton (Jackson, TN); grandchildren, Eric Epperson (Arlington, TX), Erika Epperson (West Palm Beach, FL), Elise Hampton (Conway, AR), Crystal Hampton (Frisco, TX), and Logan Hampton III (Memphis, TN); and great granddaughter, Braylee Gilbert (West Palm Beach, FL).

One of 21 siblings, Logan is survived by sisters, Bernice Hampton Smith (Richmond, CA), Donna Davis Reed (Jonesboro, AR), Barbara Hampton (Jonesboro, AR), Jessie Mae Hampton Douglas (Jonesboro, AR), Norma Jean Hampton Carter (Jonesboro, AR); and brothers, Richard Hampton (Flint, MI), Joseph Hampton (Flint, MI), Bob Hampton (Jonesboro, AR), Bill Hampton (Jonesboro, AR), Rick Hampton (Jonesboro, AR), and John Hampton (Jonesboro, AR). A host of nieces and nephews survive him from coast to coast and south to north, Landra Ray Clay, who cared for him during his illness, and wife, Constance (Pine Bluff, AR), Rev. Gary Clay and wife, Patricia (Jonesboro, AR), and Sharon Clay Stone (Northern Virginia) who fondly remembered how “Uncle L.C. stressed the importance of education and continuous self-improvement”.
