Virginia Pauline Sharpe Penland, 88, of Leicester was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on Saturday, January 2, 2021. A native of Buncombe County, NC, she was born January 27, 1932 to the late Willie and Renie King Sharpe. She was also preceded in death by her husband Robert “Bob” Vernon Penland; son, W. Creed Penland, Sr.; brother, Wilburn and William Sharpe; grandson, William C. Penland, Jr. and great-granddaughter, Kori Penland.

Pauline married Reverend Bob Penland on May 10, 1947. She remained a faithful and supportive wife as he pastored many area churches and after his ordination as a Baptist minister in 1954, and until his death on March 2, 2017, he preached on several area radio stations. Pauline was a member of Caney Fork Missionary Baptist Church in Madison County; her faith was a light to all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Donald Penland (Pat); grandchildren, Rebecca Penland Parker, (Larry) who was raised as Pauline’s own, Lila Hartline (Jacob), Leah Brumbeloe (Skylor) and Brian Penland; great-grandchildren, Robbie (Kayla) and Tyler (Shelby) Messer, Ivory Brumbeloe, Gabriel, Marcie, Alyson and Kerry Penland; great-grandchildren, Ryder and Madilynn Messer, Matthew and William Wren, Wilbur, Lula and Julyssa Sequoyah and Asher Ivey and a sister, Gerelene Hodge (Lawrence).

A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 7, 2021, at Crossroads Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Leicester. The Reverends Joe Sluder and Keith Holcombe will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Robbie, Tyler and Ryder Messer, Larry and Gary Parker and Brian Penland.
