Dr. Joseph C. Bender, school administrator and civic leader died on March 31, 2017 at his home in Mount Dora, FL at the age of 68. He was born in Allentown, PA the son of the late Joseph C. and Ruth Siegfeldt Bender.

A graduate of LaSalle University, he earned an M.Ed. and Ed.D. from Temple University with specialization in education administration. During his 36 year career in education he earned Principal and Superintendent Certification, and was President of the PA School Personnel Administrators. In his final years he was Assistant Superintendent of Pottsgrove School District in Pottstown, PA and instructor of education at Ursinus College.

During these years his interest in civic service evolved to include membership in Rotary, President of Visiting Nurses, and President of the Pottstown Senior Center. Joe thrived on the challenge of running an efficient meeting so he carried that enthusiasm on into his retirement.

Upon retirement in 2006, Joe and his wife Stephanie relocated to Mount Dora, FL. He quickly became involved in civic activities finding friendship and athletic interests in the Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church he was elected to Elder and served as the church's liaison to its Preschool. Joe joined Kiwanis, and served as President of the Icehouse Theater Board of Directors, President of the W. T. Bland Friends of the Library, and Commodore of the Mount Dora Yacht Club. When not busy setting agendas or running meetings, Joe played golf with the CCMD "Riley Group" and spent hours at his home in the Country Club working zealously in his yard.

From 2001 to 2016 the Benders could be found spending their "free time", summers in particular, at their second home in Cape May, New Jersey. This was the scene of countless family gatherings, parties with friends, and seashore adventures. Joe loved spending days at the beach, gardening in his yard, eating black raspberry ice cream at "Uncle Charlies", and storing up wonderful memories of times shared here with the children and grandchildren.

Joe is predeceased by his parents and brother Michael. He is survived by his loving family - wife Stephanie Dinges Bender, daughter Kathleen Bender (Steve) Hartenstine, son Andrew Parris Bender, stepdaughter Laura Creswell (Mark) Kauffman, stepson Gregory S. (Christian) Creswell and five grandchildren Kellen James and Ashlyn Hartenstine, Emma Maria Kauffman, Brooks and Colston Creswell

Friends are invited to attend a "Celebration of Life" at the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Dora on Friday, April 7 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Joe are invited to donate to the W. T. Bland Friends of the Library, PO Box 3, Mount Dora or the Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, Fl 32778.
