Galena's Postmaster Dead

Gordon H. Boughton
, Galena's postmaster died at 1:30 p. m. Tuesday after an eight week's illness tho he had been in poor health for a number of years. The immediate cause of death was disease of the lungs.

Mr. Boughton was born in Jenesa [Geneseo], New York, January 11 [31], 1851. With his parents he moved to Illinois and several years later to Joplin, coming to Galena in the early days of this city. For a number of years he was a prominent mine operator and was an active politician. He was appointed postmaster of Galena the sixth of last May as the position was made vacant by Wm. Smith's death.

Mr. Boughton's demise is mourned by the entire citizenship of Galena as he was a man of excellent character, honest and upright in all his dealings. He was a highly respected member of the Masonic order, Knights of Pythias, Sons and Daughters of Justice, Knights Templars, Elks, Select Knights, and Eagles.

The deceased was a single man residing with his sister, Mrs. Sallie Akes at No. 510 East Fourth Street. Besides this sister he is survived by two brothers, Frank and George Boughton of this city and sister, Mrs. A. W. McDowell of Carl Junction.

The funeral will be held at the residence this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. A. S. Freed assisted by Rev. J. S. Umberger officiating. Interment to be made in the Galena cemetery. The body lay in state yesterday afternoon from 2 o'clock to 6 o'clock.

Remains of Late Postmaster Will Lie in State at the Home Thursday From 2 to 6—Burial at Galena Cemetery.


Funeral services over the remains of the late postmaster, Gordon H. Boughton, who passed away yesterday afternoon, will be held at the home of his sister, Mrs. Sallie Akes, 504 East Fourth street, commencing at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. Galena lodge No. 194, A. F. & A. M. will have charge of the services and the funeral sermon will be delivered by Rev. A. S. Freed, of the M. E. Church, assisted by the Baptist minister. Rev. J. S. Umberger. The remains will lie in state from 2 until 6 o'clock on Thursday afternoon at the residence, so that the friends may go and view them. The interment will take place at Galena cemetery.

Postmaster Boughton's Funeral.

This afternoon at 2 o'clock the funeral services of the late Gordon H. Boughton, postmaster of our city, were held at the home of his sister, Mrs. Sallie Akes, at 510 East Fourth street, Rev. A, S. Freed, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. J. S. Umberger, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating. The funeral services were in charge of the Masonic lodge. The pall bearers were B. S. Moore, L. J. Haines, Geo. Braun, Jas. B. Rauch, Chas. L Rains and Herman Weiler.

Following the services at the home, the funeral cortege, escort of the Knights Templar and with the Masonic lodge, B.P.O.E. No. 677, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Knights of Pythias and Sons and Daughters of Justice lodges proceeded to the Galena cemetery where with Masonic rites the body was laid to rest.

The floral tributes, a square and compass from the Masons, a triangle from the Knights of Pythias, a wreath from the Eagles, a pillow from the Elks, and the beautiful ones sent by the many friends of the deceased was a mark of the love and high esteem in which the deceased was held by those who knew him. In memory of the deceased, the business houses of our city closed at 2 o'clock and remained closed until after the funeral services.

The death of Gordon H. Boughton marks the close of a life closely identified with the upbuilding of our city. He had been here since the infancy of our city and by his fellowship had won a place of high esteem and tender regard in the hearts of all who knew him.
