His death certificate refers to him as John Henry Dykstra, though naturalization records call him John Hendrik Dykstra. Dutch baptismal records identify him as Johan Hendrik Dijkstra, the son of Jan Dijkstra and Johanna Hendrica Grul.

He emigrated to the U. S. in 1907. His petition for naturalization identified his wife as Mina Dykstra, a native of Lisse, Netherlands. It lists three sons:
John -- born November 26, 1896 in Arnhem, Netherlands
Frederik -- born January 28, 1905 in Haarlen [sic], Netherlands
Albert -- born August 2, 1913 in Alhambra, California

He was a carpenter by trade.
