Word has been received by relatives in Le Grand and Merced telling of the death in battle of John Bennett, 24, grandson of Mrs Sarah [DeRossett] Turner of Le Grand and a member of Merced and Le Grand pioneer families.
Bennett joined the navy five years ago. He escaped death in the burning of the U. S. S. La Fayette during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was cited for bravery.
His father, Richard Bennett, is a nephew of John and Patrick Bennett, who lived for several years in the historic Bennett house half in Merced County and half in Mariposa County.
The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bennett, live in Napa. A number of relatives live in Merced and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Turner, lives in Le Grand. An aunt, Mrs. Genevieve Mahon, lives in Fresno.
