Sphia Fretz Burkhalter Baker was the second wife of Presley Baker. She was born about 1846 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. They were married on Feb. 3, 1876 in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. She died in 1922.

Sophia Fretz, daughter of Enos and Sophia Fretz, was born in Upper Milford township, Lehigh county, Pa., Oct. 28th, 1845. After failing in health for several months she departed this life at the home of J. H. Yost, in Edna Mills, Indiana, August 31st, 1922. At the time of her death she was 76 years, 10 months and 3 days old.

She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, having been baptized into the church in infancy. Later in girlhood she confirmed that faith. In 1853 she came to Indiana to make her home. Here she married Henry Burkhalter, who died Oct. 13, 1872. To this union six children were born, of whom two survive: Mrs. J. H. Yost, of Edna Mills, and Mrs. Wm. Dunk, of Rossville, Ind.

In February, 1876, she married Presley Baker, who died August 20, 1902. To this union eight children were born, of whom six survive: Remus Baker, of Lafayette; Mrs. Walter Snyder and Mrs. Hayes Peter, of Charlotte, Mich.; Mrs. Lawrence McNutt, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. Frank Burkhalter and Fred Baker of Clarks Hill.

She leaves one sister, Mrs. James Rothenberger, of Mulberry; four brothers, Daniel Fretz, of Monitor; Philip Fretz, of Wilson, N. C.; Henry Fretz, of Mollott, Ind. and Chas. Fretz, of Mulberry, Ind. Twenty-one grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends survive.
