Margaret "Maggie" Gerring
January 16, 1934 – June 11, 2017
Born in Clarkdale, Arizona in early 1934 to A.B. and Nell Jones, Maggie was the youngest of three children. Her siblings include her sister Celia and her brother Robert. Maggie passed away in Tucson at her home on June 11, 2017 after suffering from Alzheimer's dementia.
Her mother was widowed when Maggie was 4 years old, and the family moved from Clarkdale to Iowa, and eventually to Boulder City, Nevada. Maggie graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, in the class of 1956 with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. While at UNR, she met and married Robert Gerring. During their 22-year marriage, they raised three children, Phillip, Dorothy, and James.
In addition to being a caring mother, Maggie had a varied career, working as a chemist for several companies, as well as being a junior high and high school teacher, and a community college chemistry professor. She was also the first woman to be licensed as a registered assayer in Arizona. Maggie was very community-minded; while the family was living in Cedar City, Utah, she was the Co-Chair of the Music Arts Committee, and brought world-class performing artists to rural Southern Utah. After retiring from her last professional position as a chemist at Allied Signal in Tucson, she decided to open a credit union to serve her neighbors in the South Park and Pueblo Gardens Neighborhoods. She was not just a resident of the South Park Neighborhood, she was a dedicated neighborhood and community leader, and she served as the Co-Chair of the South Park Neighborhood Association for 13 years. Maggie received many awards and much recognition for her community service, and she was instrumental in the planning and realization of Silverlake Park and the Quincie Douglas Community Center and Pool. She often mentioned how she had simply insisted that the slide at the pool needed to be a "big one!", and indeed it is! She loved serving her community in so many ways.
Maggie is survived by her children, Phillip (Christine Federici), Dorothy (William Geyer), and James (Cynthia Cochran); her grandchildren Dakota Sims (Crystal) and Alexander Geyer; her sister Celia Lamborn (Omer), and niece Sandee Herring (Sid). She was preceded in death by her parents, A.B. and Nell Jones, her brother, Robert Jones, and his wife, Marion.
Maggie was a strong proponent of adult literacy education in addition to many other social causes.
