Prussian Monarch. The daughter of King Maximilian I of Bavaria, she was born as Elisabeth Ludovika. The twin sister of Amalie Augusta, wife of King Johann of Saxony, the family called her 'Elise'. Friedrich Thiersch taught her literature, geography and history. Elisabeth and Friedrich Wilhelm met for the first time in Baden-Baden in 1819. The highly gifted Crown prince and the intelligent princess instantly fell in love. They shared interests in Architecture, art and history. King Friedrich Wilhelm III. wanted her to convert to the protestant faith and couldn't be convinced to another way. She refused to do it but still wanted to marry Friedrich Wilhelm. After four years, in which the couples love only grew. The King suddenly changed his mind in 1823. They were married catholic by proxy on November 16, 1823. She went to Berlin where she was welcomed enthusiastically. They were married on November 29. She acted reserverd outside of the family and never became a popular queen. She often visited her family in Tegernsee and her two sisters in Dresden. (Her younger sister was married to King Friedrich August II. of Saxony) During the summer the couple lived in Potsdam. In May 1830 she finanally converted to the protestant faith. She loved children, but the couple stayed childless. She took care of orphans and poor children, especially after she became queen. From 1856 on she took care of Friedrich Wilhelm who was seriously sick. Several strokes had affected his ability to speak. Friedrich Wilhelms brother Wilhelm became regent in 1858 because the King wasn't able to fullfill his job. The two traveled to Italy where they spent New Year and visited the pope. From summer 1859 until Friedrich Wilhelms death in January 1861 they lived in Potsdam. After this she live in Sanssouci and the Charlottenburg Palace. She died in Dresden while visiting her sister.
