Army Staff Sergeant James Barton Anderson is honored on Panel 35E, Line 29 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.



SSGT. James Barton Anderson, S/N18802012, was an Airborne Infantryman assigned to B Co., 2BN/502nd Inf., 101st ABN Div. USARV. During Operation San Angelo his Company was doing unilateral search and destroy operations tasked with destroying all enemy forces within the assigned Area of Operation along the Cambodia border. On morning of 22 January 68 an element of the brigade, in night defensive position, 8 miles North East of Song Be. Was probed by enemy forces using Montagnard Civilians as shields. The Civilians detonated flares and hand grenades. Daylight patrols by the unit resulted in light casualties to enemy forces. It was on patrol that SSgt. Anderson was killed by enemy small arms fire on January 25, 1968, about 8 miles North East of Song Be, Binh Phuoc, Vietnam. 3 days before the January 29th launch of the TET offensive by the PAVN. The operation was terminated on 9 February after a series of contact had resulted in 63 enemy KIA. Friendly forces lost 12 men. SSGT. Anderson was posthumously advanced in rank and awarded the Purple Heart.
