The son of Abraham Pineo Gesner (b. May 2, 1797 - d. April 29, 1864) and Harriet (Webster) Gesner. The grandson of Colonel Henry Hendrick Gesner and Sarah (Pineo) Gesner. Married first to Annie T. Herty in 1851, in Milledgeville, Georgia, USA, and had 4 children: William Henry Gesner (b. 1852); Francis James Gesner (b. 1854 - d. 1879); Harriet Luana Gesner (b. 1857) who married first to Charles F. Miller and second to Dr. Alton G. North; Mary Herty Gesner (b. 1859) married Dr. Henry Clark. William Gesner married second to Mary Virginia Jones. Mary Jones was the sister of Governor Jones of Alabama. The children of William Gesner and Mary Virginia (Jones) Gesner all died in infancy. William Gesner was noted as a geologist. His father, Abraham Pineo Gesner, is credited with inventing kerosene an alternative illuminant to whale oil. In 1933, Imperial Oil erected a tombstone in his honour in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, for his contribution to the oil industry.
