Winnie Jane Decker VanMeter, the daughter of W. R. & Elizabeth (?) Decker, was born on February 15, 1844 in Kentucky. She was the second wife of Shelton VanMeter, the son of Nathan VanMeter and Nancy Meredith. He was born on March 15, 1828.

Shelton VanMeter was previously married to Nancy Downs, the daughter of Israel Downs and Catherine Thomas. Nancy was born on June 2, 1831 in Grayson County. They were married on May 23, 1853 in Edmonson County, Kentucky. They were the parents of the following children with the oldest born in Edmonson County and the others born in Grayson County:
1. Hendrick Duke - b. 16 May 1854 d. 8 Jul 1936 --- Mary B. Garner
2. Matilda (Malita) b: 10 Mar 1856 d. 15 Nov 1861
3. Alexander - b. 4 Nov 1857 d. 15 Nov 1923

At the time of the 1880 Census of Rock Creek, Grayson County, Kentucky the Shelton Vanmeter family consisted of: Shelton, a farmer, age 52; his wife W. J. (Winnie Jane), a house keeper, age 35; and his children by Nancy: dau N. E., age 15; son W. N., age 14; daughter E., age 17; and his children by Winnie Jane: son T. S., age 8; daughter S. C., age 5; and son John, age 2. All were born in Kentucky with their parents born in Kentucky.

Winnie Jane Decker VanMeter died on September 16, 1921. She was buried in the McGrew Cemetery west of Kentucky Highway 259 near the Grayson / Edmonson County line.
