LAURA S. PORTER; LOWELL and HOWLAND - Laura S. Porter, 92, died Sept. 8, 1985, in Howland. She was born in Silver Ridge Plantation, July 31, 1893, the daughter of Jesse and Daisy (Getchell) Smith. She moved to Lowell in 1908 at the age of 15. In 1911, she was married to the late John B. Porter, and lived in Lowell for 70 years before moving to Howland. She served as tax collecter for 11 years, school board member for 20 years and had the distinction of being the only women in Lowell to serve as first selectman. She had been a member of Escutarsis Grange since 1918, and held various offices. She also received her Pamona, State and National degrees. She was president of the Ladies Aid Society of Lowell for several years. She was a life member of Lincoln Chapter OES, an honarary charter member of the Stewart M. Lord Historical Society and a member of the Enfield Baptist Church. She was a member and instrumental in the organization of the Burlington-Lowell Senior Citizens. She was predeceased by two sons, Donald S. and J. Norman Porter. Suviving are one son, Dr. Wayne Porter of Brewer; five daughters, Mrs. Charles (Ethel) Crowell of Lee, Mrs. Daisy Curtis of Howland, Mrs. Norwood (Bethel) Treadwell of Biddeford, Mrs. Wallace (Rhoda) Dolley of Lowell and Mrs. Dean (Fern) Cummings of Edinburg; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Georgia Smith of Lowell; 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Clay, Stevens & Clay Funeral Home, Lincoln, with the Rev. Theodore Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Lowell Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday.
