HARRISBURG - Shawn Patton, 19, Harrisburg, was killed in a rollover accident on U.S. Route 45 Monday night.
Patton was driving an extended cab pickup truck south on U.S. Route 45 about 1/4 mile south of Barnett Street and attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him, according to a release from Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown.
Patton apparently decided not to pass and drove back into the southbound lane, overcorrected, drove off the side of the road and the truck overturned several times, ejecting him from the truck, according to the release.
Deputies received the call at 6:39 p.m. Saline County EMS transported Patton to Harrisburg Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.
Patton was born Dec. 8, 1987, to Frank and Rita Patton.
He was a 2006 graduate of Harrisburg High School and had many friends still at the school who are grieving his death, Principal Jim Butler said. Patton was dating a girl still enrolled at the school, Butler said.
"Shawn was all boy. He was well-liked by his fellow students and pleasant to be around," Butler said.
Butler said Patton was a valuable member the school's agriculture program was a regular face in the school's shop area. He had played football and baseball early in his high school career and always supported athletics at the school.
"I saw him around a lot and he was supportive of girls athletics being at all the volleyball and basketball games," Butler said.
Patton worked at the tire and lube department of Wal-Mart and was a member of Harrisburg First General Baptist Church.
Brown noted Patton's death is the second in the county in four weeks involving a young person not wearing a seat belt.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Harrisburg High School and funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the school.
