Willene Terese Shanks Parker, 95, passed away Monday, March 17, 1997. She was born October 22, 1901, at Perry's Landing, now in the area called Jones Creek. She was the daughter of Willie and Lottie Terasa Shanks. Her parents passed away during the pneumonia epidemic while she was in her infancy. She was raised by her grandparents, James Douglas and Mary Ann Brigance Hanson.

Mrs. Parker was educated in a one-room school house a short distance from their home. She attended high school in Palacios, Texas with her aunt and uncle, Katie and Robert Hill. She finished a salutatorian. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Freeport, Texas, she was very devoted to her church and family and was a member of Darcas. Willene was an avid gardener and loved fishing.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Anne (Key) Green of Lake Jackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Parker, Sr. in 1960; and her only son, William O. Parker, Jr. in 1984.
Many nieces, nephews and friends will remember fondly "Mam Maw'.

Friends may visit the Freeport Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 1997. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 1997 at the Freeport Funeral Home with Rev. Lonnie Duvall officiating. Private graveside services will be for the family only at Gulf Prairie Cemetery.
